The next few images give a nice demonstration of the reach of the OM System 150-400mm 1.25xTC IS Pro. On my “Tech Talk” page you can find more background information.

The elephants regularly appear from the thick forest that meanders along the river Nile. The come to the river to drink. The forrest can be very thick and difficult to penetrate. It is not uncommon that elephants sustain injuries because of the sharp branches. Notice the round hole in the elephants left ear (for us viewers: its right ear).

This young elephant misses the lower part of the trunk. The end of the trunk normally has two lips that can be used as “fingers”, that means that this young elephant has to put more effort in to getting food to the mouth.

The family member in the front shows us the lips or “fingers”, one can also see that the trunk of the little one is relatively short, compared to the other trunk.

Apart from the very long eyelashes, one can also see the “musth” coming out of the temporal gland. This oily substance functions as “smell communication”, the bulls excrete this when they are in a period of heightened testosterone production. Females also have a temporal gland, they excrete fluid when they are in high stress, extremely aroused or experience strong emotions.

Elephants take mud baths to cool themselves, protect them from stinging insects/parasites and from the sun. They take the colour of the type of mud they use for their mud baths, this elephant used a red brown type of clay.

We saw some elephants crossing the road after sunset. Gives a special effect, those headlights of the jeep on them.

Throughout the area, one can see thousands and thousands of Termite Hills, complex structures raising up to 10 to 15 feet, 3 to 5 meters high.

Butterflies eat/drink the blood of a snake that got overrun by a car.
